Juilliard String Quartet Marks Two Centennials In
Their 2005/06 Season With a World Premiere and a Shostakovich Disc Release

On October 20th at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center in New York, the Juilliard String Quartet will perform the world premiere of 45-year-old Argentinian composer Ezequiel Viñao's Quartet No. 2, "The Loss and the Silence." This piece was commissioned for them by the Juilliard School in commemoration of the school's centennial in 2006. According to Juilliard Quartet cellist Joel Krosnick, Viñao's music expresses "a very personal idiom, orchestrated in a complex and brilliant way. We've been following Viñao for a while now and we're very excited to play this new piece." Following the New York premiere, the Juilliard Quartet will perform the Viñao in Boston, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Canada and Europe. The Juilliard, which has been the Quartet in Residence since 1946, will also be featured artists in a "Live from Lincoln Center" telecast on April 3rd of the Juilliard School's centennial gala.

In honor of the Shostakovich centennial, also in 2006, the Juilliard Quartet will carry Shostakovich Quartet No. 14 in their season's programming and SONY BMG Masterworks will release a new Juilliard recording of Shostakovich's Quartets Nos. 3 and 15. Additional repertoire of the season includes works by Schubert, Brahms, Mozart, and Beethoven.
Other highlights of the Juilliard Quartet's 2005/06 season include a west coast tour, with a pair of concerts presented by the Los Angeles Philharmonic in Disney Hall. As part of it's two European tours, the Quartet will make a special appearance in Paris to play its own arrangement of Bach's "Art of the Fugue." The European tours also include performances with pianist Emanuel Ax in Salzburg, and several appearances with famed oboist, Heinz Holliger in Italy, Holland, and France. The Quartet will make its annual concert appearances in New York, Detroit, Philadelphia, as well as tours of California, Canada, and the Midwest. They will end their season with return visits to both the Ravinia and Tanglewood festivals.
